Lower Hunter Region retiree Joyce Pinchen has volunteered for JAS longer than JAS has existed in it’s current form – 14 years! During that time, she supported clients regularly at the Maitland, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri Local Courts, developing warm working relationships and a lot of respect from solicitors, court staff and her JAS colleagues. Over the last year or so, however, health concerns led Joyce to reduce her activities to Cessnock court only and, finally, to declare that she is hanging up her spurs and making way for new volunteers.
During a lunch held in her honour, members of the Newcastle JAS Team and local lawyer, Julia Clark, paid tribute to Joyce’s commitment and down-to-earth manner with everyone she encounters. “You’re an inspiration,” said Maitland volunteer Ana Mantle, who, along with other JAS people working in the Lower Hunter, is benefiting from the reputation and networks Joyce has built for JAS over the years.
Joyce, now in her eighties, was also honoured last year in the NSW Parliament, when her local member read out a citation during sittings and sent Joyce a certificate outlining the contribution she has made to the local community.
“If you need me for anything, you know where I am,” said Joyce. “And if you’re passing through Cessnock, drop in for a cup of tea.”
