Investing in people with intellectual disability to influence organisations and lead respect for rights.
The team at IDRS have secured a grant of $114,300 as part of the Disabled Peoples and Families Organisations – Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) Readiness Grant Round 2018 grant.
The grant will see the team develop training to prepare people with intellectual disability to take on roles as Board members of organisations, and to develop and support skills of people with intellectual disability to become rights leaders.
The one year project, from 2019 – 2020, is a step in the right direction for people with intellectuality disability to have a strong influence on the future direction of organisations on leading respect for rights in their community.
While funding in this area is new to IDRS the commitment and passion for capacity building in this area is not! IDRS structure includes a new advisory group, Making Rights Real. The group operates as an advisory group to the board and to team members; bringing the voice and expertise of people with disability into decisions about our organisational priorities and services.
Members of the group are selected based on their interest in the rights of people with disability, their experiences and skills in standing up for their rights and their understanding of the work and role of IDRS. The group are paid for their time and expertise.
